What creature eats plants down to the nubs?

Question by rascalgal: What creature eats plants down to the nubs?
I recently planted some petunias in pots in my backyard, and the next day, all that is left is just a tiny green nub above the soil. I wondered what could do this much damage? I planted a different plant, a spiky succulent in the same spot, and the next day, there were bites out of the succulent?? I do live near a flood canal and have some English Ivy growing on a fence between the canal and my backyard. I have tried to watch for the “plant thief”, but no success. Help!

It’s coming like a thief in the night…slugs, caterpillars, snails, grasshoppers, lots of things eat at night
